Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) is internationally regarded as one of the great innovative furniture and interior designers of the 20th century. Although his entire work comprises more than 200 items, Rietveld became best known as an architect, thanks to the Rietveld-Schröderhuis in Utrecht, which he designed in 1924 according to the ideas of De Stijl. At that time, in part thanks to his famous red-blue chair, Rietveld had become an icon in international avant-garde circles. Both in his architecture as well as his furniture designs Rietveld wanted to create space through dimension and definition. He was after clean and sober lines and consistent definition.
